Understanding Dementia

Summary
Session goals
1. Recognise the potential threat to well-being when Parent-to-Child dynamics unintentionally emerge in dementia care.
2. Explore how Transactional Analysis can promote more positive interactions between caregivers and those living with dementia.
“Eat your dinner.” “Put your shoes on.” “Don’t do that.” We associate these phrases with a parent speaking to a child. Yet many people living with dementia hear these phrases every day.
This presentation explores how Transactional Analysis provides a framework for understanding communication in dementia care. It examines how Parent-to-Child dynamics can unintentionally emerge when caregivers try to help or complete tasks under pressure.
Drawing on real-life examples, the session explores how carers can adapt their communication depending on the situation, including recognising when Adult-to-Adult interaction can be supported and when meeting the person where they’re at may help reduce distress and resistance.
Delegates will learn how this approach can promote autonomy, well-being and connection.
