About

Summary

This hands-on, practical workshop will introduce participants to the principles of playwork and how they can be used to support people living with dementia. Rooted in a recent pilot by the Centre for Dementia Research and the Childhood Development and Playwork team at Leeds Beckett University, the approach explores how spontaneous, self-directed play can enhance wellbeing, connection, and dignity in care home settings.

Participants will actively explore key playwork concepts — including the adult’s role as a facilitator, not instructor, and how to support positive risk — through simple, low-cost activities that can be easily adapted for use in care environments. The session will offer tools and ideas that attendees can take away and apply in their own practice.

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in creative, person-centred approaches to dementia care. No previous experience with playwork is needed.
