Culturally Appropriate Resources

Summary
Cultural competence in dementia care is essential yet often lacking, particularly for African and Caribbean communities who face disproportionately higher rates of dementia in the UK. This project evaluates the African and Caribbean Dementia Toolkit, developed by Carl Case, to assess its usability and impact in care settings where cultural backgrounds between care partners and people living with dementia may align or differ. Drawing on standardised measures of well-being, social support, cultural competency, and quality of life, we explore how the toolkit supports more meaningful, person-centred engagement. By gathering feedback from both care partners and people living with dementia, this project offers early insight into the potential of culturally tailored psychosocial interventions to reduce social isolation and support family relationships. Findings will inform refinement of the toolkit and its training resources, contributing to more equitable, culturally responsive care across settings including care homes, memory hubs, churches, and day centres.
