‘Unawareness’ in early dementia: symptom of disease, 31

People in the early stages of dementia are often said to be ‘unaware’ or to ‘lack insight’ – a judgement usually made without taking psychosocial factors into account. Linda Clare explores the issues, outlines a new approach that considers the perspective of the person, and describes a study based on this approach.
