Summary
The Rural and Coastal Dementia Research Project investigated the specific challenges faced by people living with dementia in rural and coastal areas of South West England, and the role of the Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector in providing post-diagnostic support. Interviews were conducted with 21 participants, including individuals with lived experience and VCFSE staff and volunteers. While participants accessed support, many still experienced feelings of disconnection. Thematic analysis of the data informed the creation of a short animation, co-developed with public contributors, to creatively share the findings. Dissemination and engagement events are planned in June 2025 in accessible local venues with those who took part in the interviews and others with lived experience of dementia. At these events we will present the findings, the animation, and include a participatory exercise where attendees can identify and be involved in future research priorities.
