Summary
Admission to a mental health ward can be distressing time, both for a person living with dementia and their carer. This study explored the experiences of 24 carers across the United Kingdom, who had supported someone living with dementia discharged from a mental health ward in the past three years. Carers reported wide variation in their experiences. While some felt supported and included in decision-making, many described poor communication, exclusion, and a lack of emotional and practical support. Key areas for improvement included clearer information about the admission process, compassionate communication throughout the care journey, and meaningful involvement in decisions. These insights will inform the co-design of strategies with people with lived experience to enhance shared decision-making and post-discharge support, with the aim of improving care quality and outcomes for people with dementia.
