Summary

‘Hallmark in Bloom’ annual garden competition judging framework was enhanced this year to reflect the understanding that person-centred care is the key driver to meaningful garden engagement. The judging criteria, and 6 months build up, incorporated the use of Step Change Design’s evidence based ‘Care Culture Map’ tool and principles to wider team involvement and support creating improved engagement outside.
This tool and the wider support prior to the competition judging days enabled the role of the team, and its culture, to be reviewed in relation to garden use and person-centred care. This allowed everyone to be part of the conversation and any planned changes to meet the needs and wishes of residents to have meaningfully garden engagement.
This approach revealed a range of insights across the homes including from those finding engagement easy to those who were struggling, informing best practices to share across all homes.
