“Honey Bluebell Book Club: Building Connection Through Reading in Residential Care”

Nelia is originally from East Timor, moving to the UK when 14. Nelia was working in retail when she needed to look after her mum who became unwell. It was this that made Nelia realise she gained a great deal from supporting others so she switched to care work, where she has been for the last 6 years. Nelia has 2 children, recently completed her NVQ 3 and FITS into Practice, becoming a Dementia coach.
Juvelyn is originally from the Philippines and has a 22 year old son. Having always worked in hospitality since coming to the UK she was encouraged by a colleague to look to housekeeping in care homes. Juvelyn realised that she was drawn to the care side of care home life and recently completed her FITS into Practice training to become a Dementia Coach to her colleagues in housekeeping whilst considering a move to the care team.

Summary
This presentation introduces an innovative and heart-warming initiative developed and led by care workers in response to a simple observation: several residents enjoyed reading independently in their rooms. Recognising a potential to connect these individuals and enhance their psychological wellbeing, a bi-weekly book club was formed to bring together those who may be less socially active but share a love for reading. The “Honey Bluebell Book Club” now fosters connection, memory sharing, and confidence-building among residents.
