Summary
This presentation shares our journey of bringing non-pharmacological interventions to life in care homes for people living with dementia who show behavioural expressions of need. With the NHS moving away from medication towards more meaningful, person-centred care, we focused on two powerful tools: Robotic Pets and Playlist for Life (personalised music playlists). We've seen how these interventions can reduce distress and bring joy—but good ideas alone aren’t enough. We faced real challenges getting them used effectively in busy care settings.
To change this, we created easy-to-use guidelines and personalised posters that help staff connect deeply with each person’s story and needs. At the heart of it all is collaboration—with families, care teams, and those living with dementia—ensuring everything we do is practical, personal, and respectful of lived experience.
