1.6 million brain scans to be analysed under SCAN-DAN Project

Permission has been granted for researchers from the universities of Edinburgh and Dundee to use artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse 1.6 million brain scans for patterns that indicate the signs of dementia.

NHS Scotland granted access to the anonymised CT and MRI images which were collected during routine clinical care between 2008 and 2018. The scans will be analysed by researchers on the SCAN-DAN (Scottish AI in Neuroimaging to predict Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disease) Project that forms part a global research collaboration called NEURii. Researchers are hoping to develop tools that will help radiologists to detect earlier signs of dementia.
