Equi publish report on faith-literacy in the NHS
Equi, a UK think tank who produce research and policy recommendations that draw on Muslim insight, has launched a report entitled: ‘Faith in the NHS: Better Health, Greater Trust, Lower Costs.’
The report calls for a faith-literate approach to healthcare and explores the role that faith-led and community organisations can play in supporting the NHS and patients of diverse faith backgrounds.
The report has five recommendations, including taking account of the faith of patients during assessments and standardising faith-literate support for staff across NHS Trusts.
Dr Emma Runswick, Deputy Chair, British Medical Association (BMA) Council, says:
“This report provides a clear evidence base for why faith must be taken seriously in the NHS. Its findings are striking. Muslim healthcare professionals overwhelmingly agree that understanding a patient’s faith needs can improve health outcomes, yet only a small minority believe the NHS consistently addresses those needs. That gap matters not only for patients of faith, but for the effectiveness of the health service as a whole.”
