Guernsey health report predicts a steep rise in numbers of people with dementia 

The 117th Medical Officer of Health Report 2023-2024 for the States of Guernsey has suggested that by 2043 there could be a 61% increase in numbers of people with dementia on the island. 

The report, entitled: ‘Investing in Tomorrow – Prioritising Prevention’, written by Nicola Brink MBE, Medical Officer of Health/ Director of Public Health, focuses on the future of island health, documenting six goals to improve health outcomes for the people of Guernsey. 

Julie Thompson, Manager of Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association, says the 61% figure is, “Quite frightening,” adding:  

“We have more and more referrals into the charity. People with different types of dementia. It’s not just Alzheimer’s, it’s frontal temporal lobe dementia, vascular dementia, we are seeing an increase in numbers due to the ageing population.”
