National Audit of Care at the End of Life publishes report referencing dementia
The National Audit of Care at the End of Life (NACEL) has published their ‘Mental Health Spotlight Audit 2025 State of the Nations Report’.
NACEL audits the last days of life in hospitals and covers NHS hospitals in England and Wales and publicly funded care in Jersey.
Data from the audit shows that dementia accounted for 40% of deaths and that 72% of deaths occurred on older adult organic/dementia wards.
The report goes on to document strengths in personalised end of life care planning and symptom management, alongside highlighting challenges around recognising deterioration and dying, access to specialist palliative care expertise, workforce capability and training in end of life care, unnecessary transfers to acute hospitals and lack of organisational leadership in end of life care.
