Deaths from dementia rise in Scotland
The National Records of Scotland has published a new report on dementia deaths showing that 6,612 people died from dementia in 2024, a 2% rise on the previous year.
In Scotland, dementia accounts for around 1 in 10 deaths, with 64% of those dying with dementia being women. Other data includes 4,258 deaths (almost two-thirds) happening in care homes, which have been described by Alzheimer Scotland as ‘hospices for people with dementia’.
Henry Simmons, Chief Executive of Alzheimer Scotland, adds:
“Thousands of people across the country are mourning the loss of friends and family members, and each year the numbers increase. Yet again women are disproportionately affected. This is another wake-up call for Scotland and a clear sign that dementia must be treated as a priority.”
