Dementia Services Development Centre work with the Stewart family to implement dementia design principles
The Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling has worked with the Stewart Family on dementia design to support Lady Helen Stewart, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2014, to maintain independence as her dementia progresses.
Lady Helen Stewart is the wife of the former Formula One World Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, and following her diagnosis the Stewart family launched ‘Race Against Dementia’ in 2016 to help accelerate global research into dementia.
The Dementia Services Development Centre say of their work with the Stewart family:
“Research has demonstrated that dementia design can improve quality of life for people living with a dementia, and their care partners, reducing negative responsive presentations and support their abilities for longer.
The design interventions employed in this project are reflective of the individual requirements and personal preferences that will support Lady Helen through her dementia journey, including end of life.”
The work undertaken has been guided by DSDC’s Environments for Ageing and Dementia Design Assessment Tool (EADDAT), and DSDC has announced that the project to transform the Stewart family Swiss apartment has been awarded a Gold Dementia Design Audit Accreditation.
