Short survey launched to understand ethnicity recording during dementia diagnosis
Dr Catherine Charlwood, Stakeholder Engagement and Impact Manager, NIHR Policy Research Unit in Dementia and Neurodegeneration (DeNPRU Exeter), has launched a short survey to understand how ethnicity is recorded during a person’s dementia diagnosis.
Catherine says:
“You may know that NHS Digital reports ‘Recorded dementia diagnosis by ethnic group’. However, there are thousands of people who have a dementia diagnosis, but their ethnicity was never asked or recorded (this is different from people who choose not to disclose it). Without knowing who is living with dementia from different backgrounds in different regions, it is difficult or impossible to get specialised services funded. We want to understand more about what is happening and why individuals are not asked their ethnicity.”
