Alzheimer’s inspired fashion collection on display in New York
A fashion collection entitled ‘Remember me Knot’ is on display at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, designed by Midlothian Art and Fashion teacher Nadia Pinkney.
Nadia’s collection was created for her fashion degree at Heriot Watt University in 2016, inspired by wanting to know more about Alzheimer’s disease after her great-grandmother and grandmother had Alzheimer’s.
Nadia had stored her collection after she graduated until she was unexpectedly contacted by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, who were looking for items to include in their ‘Costume Art’ exhibition which features fashion inspired by the human body.
Nadia says:
“I worked with researchers and doctors, who gave me brain scans that I used to create the print. When Alzheimer’s enters the brain, it tangles the neurons so there were a lot of knots and tangled materials used within the six pieces. The only colour that I used was red because not only was it my great granny’s favourite colour but it represents the areas of the brain that are still active in PET scans.”
