Local Government Association publish ‘Care Where We Live’ report
The Local Government Association (LGA) has published a report entitled ‘Care Where We Live: Local government’s role in adult social care reform’.
The report is informed by an online conversation the LGA launched in early 2026 to gather public views on the reform of adult social care (which we reported on here: https://journalofdementiacare.co.uk/local-government-associatio-online-conversation-adult-social-care).
The report begins with ‘Reasons for hope’, which is part of a theme about a growing consensus for change in social care, and how there needs to be a rebalancing of the social care settlement between the UK government, local government and the public so that support is more accessible, responsive and centred around what people who draw on support need.
This theme is balanced by commentary from the online conversation that shows the public still do not fully understand or want to prioritise social care, or have a clear consensus to resolve how it should be funded.
The report ends with conclusions and recommendations from the LGA. You can read the report here: https://www.local.gov.uk/publications/care-where-we-live-local-governments-role-adult-social-care-reform
