Care home residents collaborate with soap company to trigger memories through scent
The Yorkshire Soap Company has collaborated with residents at Anchor’s Springfield Care Home to create a dementia support soap collection.
The packaging for the collection, which is being promoted as ‘Inspired by memory, made with love’, features hand-drawn designs created and chosen by Springfield Care Home residents who have enjoyed months of art classes to help them produce the packaging.
One of the residents, Noeline Townsend, says of participating in art:
“It does unlock memories, I remember drawing at school and bits come back to you. I used to think, I am not going to write that down, I will draw it. It is wonderful because everybody has some sort of art in them.”
Inside the packaging the five different fragrances for the soaps have been chosen by the residents, with names for them including ‘Yorkshire Morning’ and ‘Grandpa’s Greenhouse’.
Proceeds from the sales of the soaps will be used for more art lessons for residents and a new dementia garden at Springfield.
