Equal Arts launch open-ended, dementia friendly books

Equal Arts is developing a series of books, created with and for people living with dementia, under their new publishing initiative, Open Ended Books.

The first title, Bewick Tales, is now available and described as:

“An uplifting book exploring the life and work of the world-famous artist and engraver Thomas Bewick (1753-1828). Providing a shared reading experience, the book has an easy to follow narrative, rich with intriguing details and illustrations. With individual stories on every two-page spread, the book aims to provoke curiosity and conversations and encourage reading for pleasure.”

Douglas Hunter, Equal Arts Chief Executive, says of this initiative:

“Our work is based on the Dementia & Imagination model and the benefits creativity can bring. There is a significant gap in resources for people receiving a dementia diagnosis. We’ve created an uplifting, accessible book that provokes curiosity, imagination and conversations between readers, their friends and family. We focus on the here and now and what people can achieve rather than the past and what has gone.”
