Fabian Society report explores unpaid carers employment and financial protections

Caring for Carers, a new report published by the Fabian Society and funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, has explored policy options for unpaid carers’ employment and financial protections.

It looks at unpaid carers differing needs and circumstances – including those in full-time work, part-time work, full-time education, and those who are unable to work (often due to the intensity of their caring responsibilities) – and makes several recommendations, including for a carers style of maternity leave that would aim to bring greater parity between the care of adults and the care of children.

Eloise Sacares, co-author of the report, said:

“Carers have spent too long with their contribution to society going unrewarded. We must now care for our carers, like they care for us.”
