Gary Thomas – who cared for his mother with Alzheimer’s disease – has created ‘Lost Memories’, a film about his experiences of being an unpaid carer, as well as the experiences of others who’ve cared for relatives.
The film combines documentary phone footage with dramatized sequences and is provided in an all-audience format to make it accessible to all, something that is really important to Gary, an experienced filmmaker who is also autistic and partially deaf.
Gary says of Lost Memories:
“I’ve often used my own life as inspiration for writing and my work in film. Being me, when my mother was diagnosed, and even before, I began recording and filming moments of our life that we shared together, both the good times and the difficult emotional times, some in audio, and some as film. I suppose I wanted a record of it, without knowing whether anyone else would see it at all.”
