Projects being funded under Marie Curie and Alzheimer’s Society EOL partnership named

The £1m partnership between Marie Curie and the Alzheimer’s Society to improve end of life experiences for people with dementia and unpaid carers/families (that we reported on here: https://journalofdementiacare.co.uk/open-call-for-research-applications) has named its funded projects.

The projects are aiming to develop practical tools, training and guidelines to improve support and reduce hospital admissions. This is timely as figures from Marie Curie show that only 25% of people with dementia receive specialist palliative support compared to over 80% of people with cancer (statistics from this report https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/globalassets/media/documents/policy/beol-reports-2024/beol-2024-time-to-care-report.pdf that we covered here: https://journalofdementiacare.co.uk/research-from-end-of-life-survey).

The host organisations for the projects are Kings College London and University College London. The projects are:

  • PALLDEM-Homecare – Homecare Practitioners providing end of life care for people with dementia.
  • Understanding and improving death literacy in dementia: The development and implementation of a measure of death literacy for carers of people with dementia (Dementia UK are involved in this project).
  • Influence of primary and community care service use on hospitalisation among people with dementia in the last three months of life.
  • Starting early, talking together – Improving understanding and support for palliative care needs of people with rare dementia.

You can find out more about the projects, including films about each project, here: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/research-and-policy/research/research-grants-scheme-dementia
