NHS England report record dementia diagnosis figures for June

NHS England has reported that 487,432 people in England were given a diagnosis of dementia in June 2024.

This is the highest rate of diagnosis, 65.0%, since the start of the pandemic. The NHS ambition for diagnosis is 66.7% of the total number of people estimated to have dementia. This figure was last met in 2019.

These latest statistics now mean that England has one of the highest dementia diagnosis rates in the world, with high-income countries usually in the range of 20-50%.

The National Clinical Director for Dementia at NHS England, Dr Jeremy Isaacs, says:

“NHS staff have worked hard to recover services with the number of people with a diagnosis rising significantly over the last year, and now at a record level, but there is more work to be done.

Thousands more individuals are being diagnosed each month and more medication reviews are being done within 12 months.”
