Scottish Government publish new palliative care strategy
The Scottish Government has launched a new palliative care strategy entitled: ‘Palliative Care Matters for All’.
The strategy runs from 2025-2030 and was written in partnership with NHS Scotland as well as charities, health and social care professionals, and those with experience of palliative care services.
Expected outcomes from the strategy include:
- Enhanced integration of specialist palliative care into hospital and community services.
- Improved public information about living with life-limiting conditions.
- Better support around death, dying and bereavement.
- Community-led networks being enabled to help people to talk more openly about death and dying.
- A new Scottish Palliative Care Learning Hub to improve training and education.
Jennie Minto MSP, Minister for Public Health and Women’s Health, says:
“We want everyone in Scotland – regardless of age, diagnosis, or location – to have access to timely, high quality and person-centred palliative care. This strategy is rooted in the voices of people with experience of palliative care, alongside the expertise of professionals, carers, and the third sector. Working in partnership, we hope to ensure that palliative care is compassionate, person-centred, and available to all who need it.”
The strategy includes support for people living with dementia, notably in relation to specialist palliative care services.
