Study links multiple mental health conditions with an increased risk of developing dementia
A study published in BMJ Mental Health has shown that people with multiple mental health conditions face an increased risk of developing dementia.
Researchers found that people with two psychiatric conditions were twice as likely to develop dementia, whilst those with three had over four times the risk and with four or more psychiatric disorders the risk was up to eleven times greater.
Dr Marc Leclerc, lead author of the study, says:
“This is a crucial finding. It suggests that psychiatric comorbidity could act as an early warning sign of dementia and should not be overlooked in clinical practice.”
