Carers UK publishes State of Caring report focusing on mental health and carers’ support needs

Carers UK has published ‘State of Caring: The impact of caring on carers’ mental health and the need for support from social care services.’

This report, based on a survey conducted between June and August 2024, looks at the challenges faced by unpaid carers and how their needs are going unmet.

Key survey findings include:

  • 57% of carers feeling frequently overwhelmed and 35% reporting poor mental health.
  • Only 23% of carers have had a Carer’s Assessment in the last 12 months.
  • 42% of carers who’d had a Carer’s Assessment said their local authority had not supported them following this.

The report makes a range of recommendations, including that unpaid carers are given prominence in the work of the Casey Commission (read more about the Casey Commission here: https://journalofdementiacare.co.uk/uk-government-announce-casey-commission-into-adult-social-care), and for substantial investment in breaks and respite services.
