Dementia included in Baroness Casey’s evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee
Baroness Casey has talked about dementia during her evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee.
Amongst her comments, Baroness Casey says:
“It’s something I can’t convey to you how strongly I think that this policy area needs to be looked at, driven and pushed. That I think it’s like an elephant in the room. It’s the biggest killer. It’s the thing the public worry about the most. And I think it’s a very underdeveloped area of policy basically, both within the Department of Health and more generally.”
Many other issues were covered, with items of note including:
- A large-scale public engagement programme will start soon to gather the public’s understanding of social care and their role in a National Care Service.
- The Commission’s report this year will include actions that can be implemented before the next general election and will set out plans for further work should Labour be re-elected.
- There is flexibility in the timeline for the Commission’s final report and recommendations. These are due to be published in 2028 but may be published earlier.
