Study links menopause-related brain changes to Alzheimer’s

A study published by Cambridge University Press has shown that the menopause is linked to changes in the brain similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s disease.

The Cambridge University study analysed data from 125,000 women and looked at the impact of menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on mental health, cognitive function, and brain structure.

The authors say in their conclusion:

“Our findings suggest that menopause is linked to adverse mental health outcomes and reductions in grey matter volume in key brain regions. The use of HRT does not appear to mitigate these effects and may be associated with more pronounced mental health challenges, potentially due to underlying baseline differences.”
